... Winter storm winding down through the Mid-Atlantic states as of Sunday night. The majority of the precipitation shield is across Maryland, the coastal regions of Virginia, as well as Delaware. Moderate to heavy snowfall rates are still possible as the storm captures some Atlantic moisture to work with, while at the same time moving further out to sea. The winter weather discussion from WPC has additional details on this system.

The more significant facet to this storm system will be the winter weather impacts. On Friday, heavy snow is expected to occur along the Colorado Rockies and northern New Mexico. From Friday night into Saturday, widespread snow is forecast to effect areas from the central plains to the western portions of the Ohio Valley. The heaviest snowfall accumulations with this event are currently anticipated across northern Missouri and central Illinois

A multiday storm is bearing down on the region. Currently, a small but intense band of snow is steadily progressing eastward. Numerous crashes have resulted in sluggish interstates across PA due to a rapid drop in pavement conditions. WWAs have been expanded into lower elevation terrain as a result of a colder-than-expected airmass sticking around the region. For southern areas, including SW CT and the NYC metropolis region.

An almost-perfect January storm track is "let down" by zero interaction with the northern stream, leading it to be yet another "majority" rainstorm. However, there are still some winter headlines, albeit limited. WWAs have been posted in New York and Massachusetts due to some areas of freezing rain that are possible on the northern periphery of the storm.

A minor impact system will impact the Northeast and parts of New York and Pennsylvania on January 3rd. There appears to be a widespread chance of a light snowfall, with the rain/snow line being around the CT-RI latitude. There is the potential for some southern stream energy to bolster the storm more than the ensembles are suggesting, but overall impacts will be light.

Winter storm to bring heavy snow initially to Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire before transitioning to mixed precipitation and potentially rain on the backside. Maine has the most potential for heavy snow, with the AFD out of GYX saying "...WINTER PRECIPITATION TO IMPACT NEW YEAR'S TRAVEL..." A difference with this storm is the potential for high winds, with gusts between 50 and 60 mph expected to impact Massachusetts.

A developing storm system will track through the Great Lakes into Canada, bringing rain to all areas of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. However, there is still a pertinent winter threat in the form of freezing rain and mixed precipitation. With cold air in place throughout the region, and the warmth arriving in warm air advection, there exists a possibility of cold air damming.
