December 4-13*, 2018 | Cold Wave and Blasts | Polar Air OBS

Staff Recommended Posts

Doesn't this thread sound familiar? It's because it is. In fact, I can pretty much quote my opening from the last thread.

Well folks, it should be no surprise that we have been in an abnormally cold pattern.

Here's a look at where our polar airmass is coming from, courtesy of the 18z ICON.

FV3-GFS 2-meter temperature anomalies - appears that the cold wave is at maximum on Saturday, December 8th. I did not include an end date to this thread because the "warmup" is storm-dependent.

18z ICON 2-meter temperatures - look at the below 0°F temperature range in the interior.

And lastly, 18z NAM 12k 2-meter windchills... WOW.

I'll be skiing Saturday morning, so I'll be in prime position to give OBS.:ColdBreath:

As someone from Maine, I imagine your definition of cold might be a bit more stringent than some. Cold for you probably doesn't start until you put a - in front of the number.  Crazy how it's all relative. People in Florida put on heavy jackets when it hits 60.

The cold around turkey day really "pulled the bandaid off",had to acclimate quick, so that actually helped me this season.  It's also a mindset, once the cold gets into your head, it's all you think about.

Chilly this morning at 6.4°

I've always marveled at how 40 degrees in october feels so different from 40 degrees in February. That's a Virginia scale but I'm sure the concept applies everywhere.

Sitting at 7° here. Tractor was a little rough to start, time to go knock down some trees. Getting a late start on next years firewood!

This cold blast has been a blessing for me. I had 3 tons(150 forty pound bags) of wood pellets delivered last Sunday. I had to get them from my driveway into my basement which I did during the week in this nice crisped no rainy weather. BEAUTIFUL!  I could not have asked for better weather for this. :brian-dancing-banana-smiley-emoticon:

Hadn't really noticed the cold.  But looking at the last week, its been pretty cold compared to normal in our area. DXR is 4 below, BDR is 3 below and OXC is almost 3 below normal since 12/1.  Normal highs now are around 40 for inland CT.

Some pictures from earlier that I never posted.

December 8, 2018. Beautiful, bluebird day. Temperature was cold at first, was using a balaclava, but as the day progressed it became perfect temperature. Powder day, apparently one of the best early season conditions in the past 20 years.

December 9, 2018. Light snow showers for pretty much most of the day, probably because of orographic lift. A bit icier due to more traffic, but still powder.

Stowe has a very nice temperature gauge setup. This is from around noon on the 8th.
