Dec. 31-Jan.2 Potential Winter Storm

Staff Recommended Posts

Normally wouldn't start a thread for a storm 2 weeks out but with this potentially affecting New Years plans and consistently showing up on both FV3 and GFS I decided to make an exception. Plus it does give us something to track and discuss.

Of all the possible upcoming waves, this one looks the most intriguing to me.. seems to finally have the cold air lassoed.

looks fun give it a week and we will be looking at flurries

At this point, I'd be thrilled to be looking at flurries.

Models seem to be shifting slightly east and south with track of the low.  I like the trend.

I agree out of all the systems between now and then if one will amount to something it'll probably be this one

We'll have to bare through a cutter or two to lay down our plain's snowpack for better cold intrusions etc. Looks like Dec 28th will do a great job of that.

Then this period will be interesting.

18z GFS is a cutter that tracks through central IL into MI. Rainfest for most of us.

A miserable cold rain in Chicago with the snowline just to the NW. Now that I can see verifying! lol

I'm telling myself this exactly. Yes, it sucks not getting snow and it sucks that it's probably going to get into the 50s and rain Thursday, but a good snowpack to our NW is beneficial. Gotta play the long game.

6Z GFS (and FV3) were back to cutter city, as was the 0Z CMC. The 0Z Euro was glorious for Chicago and points Northwest.
