December 30-31 Potential Winter Storm

Staff Recommended Posts

There are signs of a weak system pushing through just before new years. FV3 is jucier than the OP GFS on the 12z runs. 12z GGEM not showing anything and 12z NAM at the end does show the possible beginning of this in the southwest.

Add the 0Z Euro to that. And the 6Z GFS. The 6Z FV3 brought it back somewhat (though weak).

18z GFS FV3 had a stripe of heavy snow from west central to north central Ohio. The snowfall across IL/IN/OH is all from this system. I included a close up of the heavier band.

Hopefully it’s picking up on a colder air trend.

0z NAM goes out to 12z on the 30th. The one thing I noticed is that it's much colder at the surface. It has the freezing line at the KY/TN border while the 18z GFS and FV3 had it along the I-70 corridor. Just something to keep an eye on with the rest of the 0z runs.

I'm not sure I was even this frustrated when it was 70 degrees in December a few years ago. This is just a garbage pattern

That would usually be a great track for Chicago. Not this winter, though.

It's only the second week of winter.  Give it time!

We managed a dusting in the city, too. Most snow I've seen since 11/25. How sad!

NAM slower and deeper and further NW with the low Monday. It's been consistently north of the GFS, but it's changed a lot from 12z to 0z today.
