    Announcements

Hey all, I ran into a snag with the microsoft office suite at work this week it magically wanted to not work so I have to take my stuff with me back home over the holidays to work it out and finish the 2 threads I was creating. Maybe santa will surprise me with an early christmas gift of a new laptop, doubt it but may have to go black friday shopping to see if there is anything good out there. Thanks for your patience and at least the one should be up thanksgiving. More announcements to come. Happy Thanksgiving Tylor

Well after a long thought ordeal i have come to the conclusion that this will unfortunately be my last post for the forseeable future. It pains me as much as love discussing weather and helping out, i will not be back for quite some time. Be careful out there folks. Enjoy your snow and always remember to enjoy the weather for all its excitement. Tylor

I really hope those areas still seeing the temp drop dont turn over to FZR that is a very bad temp to be at with rain falling.

Its a real shame with the government shutdown cant get hourly ruc soundings but should know in a half hour what the latest update is for aloft across the area, broad stroke, of course. I think NYC area wont experience the surge until tries to make the mountain crossing should be after midnight. Ha yes so NW to ENE

Well thats interesting our winds down here are now NW not sure they will stay that way but lets see where it goes from here. Might be the setting up of the path to follow as it crosses the mountains.

Looking at pressure maps should go to about morgantown with the low and then traverse ENE, not a usual path, to the NJ coast. KLNS and KTHV have switched to freezing rain so they may have gotten about an inch maybe two in areas where it lasted longer.

Current obs down at BWI now 38/35 was 36/31 at the start of precip. Started as rain here. Wiggles in wind from 060 to 080 brisk 10knot wind though and getting stronger. Rain also picking up quickly

Many years of living just west of philly has taught me to watch out.

Yes that is the usual coastal front that sets up in CAD situations but it is not along the coast this go around already miles inland and even when we tend to see this front it help lock things in a little longer from 95 west but this go around it is changing rapidly.

https://www.aviationweather.gov/metar We have northerly winds here into the western MD and northern VA but still flooding with warm air. Frederick was snow now over to rain areas into southern PA with a SE wind in the middle of usual CAD areas the valley/ridge system will play with the winds but overall its not there with staying power. Up near Atown might be interesting to see how long it holds on they usually tend to stay cold long but will have to wati until the precip rates pick up more to see how things mix out.

yea unfortunately Im not sure that northerly component comes into play much usually in CAD that is already present. Around that area it looks to be trying to set up the baroclinic zone but probably wont get really established until NYC area where we get a nice coastal front setting up. We are already past our usual transfer spot to keep things cold into Eastern PA. Valleys always the hardest to scour out cold and honestly some may not even see above 34 but that transition from snow to sleet/zr is coming quick.

    January 19-21, 2019 | Winter Storm

There we see our transition line
  19. so_whats_happening

    January 19-21, 2019 | Winter Storm

Yes the idea is the path of least resistance but if it can squeak out as much as it can from the lifting portion of the jet along with the strong temp gradient it will hold there. Alot of the times when we see those pressure falls it tends to be due to low pressures entering the region not necessarily the low traveling in that direction. If you wanna see where it will go next look for that temp gradient and the upper levels also coinciding with that region. Without both it will follow along as it sees fit until that criteria is met.

Be careful though using these maps the storm has yet to occlude and allow for some type of "transfer" if you will to keep the steam rolling. With the storm already hitting into eastern Kentucky it is not too good with no inverted trough near the coastal plain where it would take hold of the new boundary. Its not the normal transfer we tend to see where the primary occludes and weakens to the west or SW and makes a new storm on the coast it will just "transfer" its primary to a new baroclinic zone.

Yea nice thump about to come hearing of issues to west of here MDBR area getting smacked from what seems to be a standing wave scenario with easterly flow and things moving in from the sw. pretty interesting to watch. im going to use obs from you all up that way to determine if I should drive home or not.

I could see 4-8 for you but that change will come quick from aloft. So hopefully you can get into some good stuff. Rain picking up here in waves.
