...very active area for large earthquakes and swarms...i.e. the Mojave Desert...the first quake seemed to be a right lateral 'slip-strike' temblor ~M 6.4...the second quake (now considered "Main quake") appears to be the more 'normal' left lateral 'slip-strike' quake consistent with the movement of the Pacific Plate abutting and 'scraping' by the heavy US Continental Plate in a south to north manner...consistent with the general motion of energy in the larger San Andreas fault zone that runs nearly throughout the entire State of California...camap.thumb.gif.7ae1b1da0031d9ba50df148e054ab0bd.gif

from  USGS Earthquake Hazards Program

...this earthquake occurred south of the line represented by the 1872 Lone Pine EQ...in Kern County, which has a history of earthquakes similar to this one...California is "Earthquake Country"

...and we in the SF Bay Area are only months from the 30 yr. "Anniversary" of the Oct. 17, 1989 earthquake (~M 6.9)  that damaged freeways, homes , and skyscrapers...taking over 50 lives and billions of dollars in damage...

...idee remembers all too well:classic_ohmy:
