Janauary 7th-9th Winter storm

Staff Recommended Posts

We got a gust front! Strange seeing that in Cleveland in January. Almost literally the middle of winter.

Pretty spectacular differences between SW Ohio and SE Michigan this evening. Huge inversion aloft, biggest I think I've seen that far aloft. Also 3-4 kilometer difference in the location of the tropopause.

This appears to be carrying from Lake Michigan as the winds are still quite strong and nothing is showing on radar IMBY.

It appears the Lakes are regurgitating everything they digested throughout December, lol.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The morning rush hour commute might be challenging for those in
the primary and secondary Snowbelt. It has been interesting
overnight watching how this lake effect event has been
developing and playing out over out local area. Arctic air
continues to spill over the Great Lakes Region this morning and
they are all open for business. We have been tracking several
bands which we have traced all the way back to Lake Superior
overnight. As of this discussion, there is one persistent band
that has developed over portions of Lorain County into Medina
and Summit County. This band has been an overachiever with
moderate to heavy snow at times. Another band has formed near
the Kelly Island down towards Ashland. We are currently watching
another band over the lake just north of downtown Cleveland
that is trying to get organized. We will see if that one becomes
the new main band and moves into portions of the Cleveland area
or the primary Snowbelt just northeast of the metro area.

High-Res and near term model data has not been much help with
the overnight and early morning snow bands. We have been getting
clues on the surface winds and areas of convergence showing up
on the surface observations this morning. The coldest of the
chunk of Arctic air is now coming over Lake Erie at this time.
850 mb temps are around -15C to -18C. Looking up stream over the
lakes, we haven`t seen the indication yet of a decrease in the
LES. We have expanded the Winter Weather Advisory to include the
secondary Snowbelt areas this morning through 10 am. The day
shift may need to extend the time if the LES doesn`t quit by
then. We have also expanded the Winter Weather Advisory for near
shore areas of Erie County including the city of Erie. That
advisory will go through this afternoon. In the secondary
Snowbelt areas, especially Medina, Summit, and portions of
Portage County, we may see a storm total snowfall of 3 to 7
inches with locally higher amounts in the higher terrain. In the
Winter Storm Warning, we are still expecting a storm total
snowfall of 6 to 12 inches with locally higher amounts in the
higher terrain of Erie and Crawford Counties. With the gusty
northwest winds up to 30 or 35 mph, we are seeing some patchy to
areas of blowing snow and briefly reducing visibilities on area
roads.

I didn't even know that we could get bands from Lake Superior. It is so far away.

I've had flurries and occasionally a heavier band moving through my area of Miami County steadily since about 8PM last night.  Biggest accumulation of the year!

The chickens are definitely not happy.  They refuse to step out into this.
