I will never forget the one (VERY cold) clipper we got a few years ago that was supposed to give us a nice 2"-3".. and then there was a sudden and dramatic shift to bring Central Ohio into a very narrow band of 6"-7". It was awesome.

I think I remember this. Was it the one that had some lake effect coming from Lake Michigan into Central Ohio? I still have video from that. We'd have squalls for 15-20 minutes of 1/10 mile visibility. Short break, repeat. Awesome indeed.

Believe it or not, this is the most interesting system I've had to watch all year.

I also can remember a few times probably 5+ years ago where clipper systems like this tapped into gulf moisture and ended up dropping like 7-9". Doesn't happen too often but when everything falls into place it's a pleasant surprise lol

It would appear this clipper system may also wake up the lakes and get the lake effect snow machine working for parts of Michigan going into late week and beyond.

Quote

A relative lull in sensible weather for very late Wednesday night
into early Thursday morning, although some west flow flurries may
continue to dot the map. Otherwise, attention then turns to later
Thursday morning as a clipper system is expected to be racing out of
Canada southeastward into the northern Great Lakes. Snow showers may
arrive as early as late Thursday morning across eastern upper and
northwest lower before gradually spreading eastward across the
majority of the forecast area Thursday afternoon into Thursday
evening. While accumulation is expected to be rather light for most
areas through Thursday, this will set the stage for lake effect snow
to continue downwind of the lakes Thursday night into Friday, which
early signals point toward the potential for a high impact lake
effect event during that time frame, given increased moisture aloft,
fairly unidirectional northwest boundary layer flow and the
occasional subtle mid-level perturbation providing an uptick in
synoptic support.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Monday)
Issued at 339 AM EST Tue Jan 22 2019

High Impact Weather Potential: Active weather continues with several
chances for accumulating snow through the weekend, along with
another round of very cold temperatures.

As was alluded to above, lake effect snow is expected to continue
Friday into Friday night, along with a return to well-below normal
temperatures as highs struggle to climb past the single digits above
zero. Certainly could be another round of wind chill concerns along
with reduced visibilities and snow-covered roads, at times. This
pattern continues through the remainder of the weekend with periodic
short waves/clippers moving through the flow providing enhancement
to any ongoing lake effect snow showers, although as was alluded to
by the prior forecaster, the one limiting factor may very well be
increasing ice cover as another round of very cold temperatures will
only help to accelerate that process next weekend.

Should the dates on this be changed to reflect the 28th-29th? GFS shows a good piece of energy coming through those days and really nothing prior on the 26th or 27th.

That's new to this run. The past 5+ have had it coming through on the 26-27th. I'd probably wait to see if it hold this.

A few more runs like the GFS FV3 just showed and this place would be hopping again.

This was a combination of the clipper system and then a second storm on the 28/29.

It's literally just one run that has showed it but at least it's some eye candy and a nice dangling carrot... :classic_tongue:

What did the State of Michigan do to the GFS?

we could literally load our board up with clipper threads. As stated above the one after this looks interesting also. It will be worth noting though when the first tracks, and if they proceed south sequentially from there

Guess you could say the EURO is not buying it lol

I thought I remember getting told that the Euro sometimes struggles with clippers but I might be thinking of something else.
